Strength, Power, and Energy.
Are these 3 things we want
or things that we all need?
As we age powerfully, we should start to think about why we all need to strength train and why it is important-
To start, the answer is YES. We should all be building strength, power, and energy to last all day because we all have:
*Functional Needs*
When is the last time you have been on the ground?
On 1-knee?
Balancing on 1-leg?
Now, think about how hard or easy was it to get off the ground. Were you able to use 1 arm and two legs or did you need both arms on the floor.
You should have the ability to get up off the floor through our flexibility, mobility and strength to use our legs and only 1 arm if needed to get up from a kneeling position.
Fallen and can’t get up….not something we want for a long…long time. Maybe when we are 95 or 100.
The second strength, power, and stability can help us live the way we want to.
*Preventing Falls*
Yes! and Yes.. Again!
Google says anyone 60 years or older are elderly. I think that is low, but….a stat nevertheless.
You need to have the correct amount of strength, stability, power, and speed – and not a 40-yard dash time I am talking about. I am referring to have the ability to be able to move your foot to the left or right to stabilize yourself to prevent a slip in the shower, on ice outside your door in our wonderful winters :), or just a mis-step we all take including myself from time to time.
The last and certainly not the least important part of consistent strength training:
Aging and Loss of strength
For every year you go without engaging in a regular strength and conditioning program (like here at Rockstar Fitness 2-3 days a week I offer to all my adult clients),
You lose
10% of strength *and*
6% of power.
Power is the combination of
Speed and Strength
This is a loss of 16% of your ability to get up, play with your son, granddaughter, hike a mountain, or walk a long trail each morning with safety and confidence you deserve as you age powerfully!
